One Direction’s (from left) Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne
BREAKING NEWS: One Direction has just been enlisted as the newest A-list endorser of a Filipino-made line of clothing. Your Funfarer is now in London to interview the boy band which is taking the music world by storm. Watch for a follow-up story soon.
Barely two years ago, not many people have heard of One Direction. Today, mention the name and eyes, especially those of the Tween Generation, light up with their hearts beating as fast as, if not faster than the beat of the quintet’s music. The names of the cute boys — Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles — are on the lips of swooning fans around the world.
Formed in The X Factor talent search by Simon Cowell in 2010, One Direction released its No. 1 debut single What Makes You Beautiful in September last year. Its debut album Up All Night has so far hit No. 1 in 17 countries, making the group the first UK band to debut at No. 1 on the US Billboard. Since then, One Direction has been touring the world non-stop.
Latest word: One Direction has ranked No. 1 in 40 countries with the pre-order EP for its new single Live While We’re Young (released locally by Ivory Music), making it the fastest-selling pre-order single in history. The record was officially released last Sept. 30 in the UK and on Oct. 1 in the US and Canada. It should be available worldwide by this time. The group’s second album will be released next month.
Funfare did an exclusive phone interview with Harry Styles (who was in London) last week. Excerpts:
Hello, Harry. How are you?
“I’m very well. How are you?”
I’m okay. Harry, you and the four other guys have been on the tour these past two years, busy with concerts and promoting your records. How are things so far?
“It’s been great! I would say that it has been a complete life change. You know, we’ve been busy on tour and kind of traveling the world. Yes, we’re having a great time.”
Don’t you have time to relax? If ever you have spare time, how do you spend it?
“I think the nice thing to do when you have time off is just kind of do the things that you usually do — you know, hang out with friends, watch films with your family or do mindless things like just sitting around or simply sleeping.”
Not everybody your age is as successful as you are. How do you five guys handle success?
“Different people handle things differently. You know, it’s quite easy to get caught in things. We’re just thankful for this opportunity and we’re enjoying it.”
I know that you are in touch with your fans through social networking. Are you open with them?
“Yeah, definitely! Social network is an amazing way of making close contact with our fans. For example, when I was younger I never thought how powerful social network could be; I never thought that things like Twitter and Facebook were possible. Now, everybody is into it, myself included.”
You five guys blend very beautifully with each other. What do you have in common aside from your love of music?
“We are all young guys and we are all going through these things together. It helps a lot in terms of dealing with people. We are learning a lot.”
The title of your new single is Live While You’re Young. Are you living true to that title? Are you enjoying life, and how?
“Definitely! I think we’re working so hard but we should enjoy life a bit at the same time. If you didn’t, you would look back on it and tell yourself, ‘I should have had a bit more fun at that time.’ The important thing is to have fun even if you’re working so hard.”
You’ve been traveling the world. What have you learned from it?
“Ahhh, I think I just kind of enjoy learning different cultures. When you go to different countries that you’ve seen in the movies, you realize that you discover a lot more about them.”
You have a lot of fans in the Philippines. Any chance for One Direction to visit the Philippines, and how soon?
“Yeah, definitely! I think we might have to go there soon. We didn’t really expect our current tour to go as well as it did last year and I think that we’re going to as many places as we can — as soon as we can.”
What do you know and what have you heard about the Philippines so far? Filipinos are very musical, did you know that?
“There are a lot of people from the Philippines who are very supportive of One Direction. I hope to learn more about the Philippines if and when we go there.”
Do you have any Filipino friends?
“Hmmm, none…so far. But I’m in touch with fans from the Philippines on Twitter and Facebook, and they are always great, and I thank them for that.”
Have you worked with any Filipino artist?
“Not yet…so far.”
Are you happy with the direction that you’re taking now?
“Yes, definitely! We’re very happy.”
